Clerks II

Clerks II (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)

Clerks II was the wife and I’s first night out since having the twins and we had a good time with it. The movie has all of the strengths and weaknesses of the first one– it’s too talky and the characters are a little too erudite for credibility’s sake, but the flick is funny and that’s really all that matters. What this new one brings to the table too is a pinch of sweetness that was well-handled by Mr. Smith and the cast. We left the theatre feeling good.

And, oh yeah, Rosario Dawson is really good in the movie. A nice counterpoint to the rest of the cast who, of course, were mainly non-professionals.

And Then There Were Four…

Just a quick note: My wife and I welcomed twin boys into the world on July 8th. As you can imagine, it’s been a rollercoaster ride ever since. Momma and da boys are doing just fine with one small caveat (emphasis on the small) –one of the boys was a pound lighter than his bro. Seems we had a bit of a placenta hog on our hands. The big ‘un is home and the lil’ ‘un is still in the hospital. “Tiny” is doing just fine, but he’s developmentally a little behind the curve. He’ll be able to join the rest of us as soon as he figures out the whole suckling thing. They tell us it’s just a matter of time.

Thanks to all of the well-wishers from the past few days! You guys are aces.

(Slumbering giants, destined to make the world quake in fear!)

Dads

I can’t help thinking about my old man this week. We lost my dad in 2001 –a heart attack took him at the tender age of 56. Like all of us, dad made his mistakes, but he was a top-drawer father and a good guy. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss his humor and his counsel. Even today, nearly five years later, I still make the mistake of thinking I can call him to get his advice. Losing a parent is just something you never get past –not completely anyway.

As I write this, it’s Wednesday and I’m just three days away from becoming a father myself. I hope I learned the things my father tried to teach; what to do, what not to do. He made his mistakes, I’m sure I’ll make mine too (they’ll just be different mistakes, God willing).

Not sure what the point of all this is… I just wanted to throw a shout-out to my old dad and wish myself luck for the parenting ahead.

Jeff

My friend Beth has written a very eloquent look back at Jeff Buckley’s Grace LP. I’m a huge fan of the late, great Mr. Buckley and I could go on and on about Grace, but why bother when Ms. Coffey has done such a fine job of it herself? –Take it away, Beth…
